Why is online learning with Politismos value for money?
Because every second you are online with one of our teachers you are taking part in a communicative act. Studying in a group does have certain advantages but in a group of, let us say, 16 students, how long are you as an individual actively communicating in English with someone else?  The answer depends on your own self-confidence, the approach of the teacher and precisely what you are learning, but it is probably about a tenth to a quarter of the time that you are actually in the classroom (and much of that time may be conversing with other non-native speakers).  This is not to mention time saved on travelling to and from the classroom.

How does it work?
We offer two types of courses online.  You can choose to do one or both. Firstly there are our so-called “Total English” classes. With this mode of delivery you have classes with a highly qualified and experienced teacher where the accent is on communication during contact time. You also, however, follow a strict course of study covering all the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, and also study grammar and vocabulary. In addition you must make a commitment to self study outside contact time (approx 2 hours self-study organised by the teacher for every 30 minute lesson). This self-study may be extra practice or preparation for the next class.  Alternatively you may want pure communication and conversation practice with one of our trained native-speakers with commitment only to prepare a topic for the next class. This is known as “Conversation English”. You can, of course, opt for a mixture of both. The cost for each type of course is different (see below)
With both options you will be expected to have email contact with your teacher for further language practice and to exchange information and materials, homework etc

How often do I have classes?
That depends on you, but there is a minimum of 30 minutes contact time per week and a minimum registration of 10 hours contact time in total.

When do I have classes?
The timing of the classes is agreed at the beginning of registration and is arranged at your convenience and according to the availability of our staff

What happens if I miss a class?
Generally speaking your timetable is arranged at the beginning of your contract period and this must be adhered to.  If because of an unavoidable situation you must miss a class, but you are able to give notice of one week at least, it may be possible to arrange a different time at the discretion of your teacher.  If, for example, you have a planned holiday, this can be built into your timetable at the start of the contract – probably with classes re-scheduled before and after your planned absence. So there is more flexibility than with a group class.

What materials are used?
This depends on the options you have chosen and your objectives. Generally speaking for the Total English option you will be expected to purchase a course book in agreement with your teacher. For Conversation English there is no course book.  Both options will make use of other materials available on the internet or materials sent to you by your teacher

How much study must I do in my own time
This depends on your objectives and the options you have chosen (see above).  Certainly for Total English self-study work will be provided and you will be expected to prepare for your contact lessons in advance.  For language learning in general, however, it is often more important what you manage to do outside the classroom rather than in it if you want to make fast progress.

How do I get started?
Easy. Contact us via email, telephone or Skype (details below) and we will get back to you. We will discuss your needs and arrange a free online class to assess your level. We will then agree a programme of study.

What equipment and hardware do I need?
You will need a webcam, microphone and a broadband internet connection. The better the equipment and the faster the broadband connection, the more enjoyable your experience.

How much does it cost?
Our basic fees are £24 an hour for “Total English” and £15 an hour for “Conversation English”. As mentioned above you may choose to mix both modes of delivery.  For example, if you register initially for 10 hours of Total English and 10 hours of Conversation English and have 30 minutes of each per week, it would cost £390 over a twenty week period.
