EFL Cambridge Examination Courses

Politismos Limited is pleased to announce its first EFL courses open to the general public. The courses are designed for non-native speakers of English, resident in Hull and the surrounding area, who wish to improve their knowledge of English in grammar and vocabulary and in all four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing and who also wish to gain an academic qualification at the appropriate level (Cambridge ESOL Examinations).

For maximum flexibility and effectiveness the courses are ongoing and you can start and finish your course at any time by registering and paying for ten or twenty weeks as and when it suits you.

How much does registration cost?

£120.00 for ten weeks  or £216 for twenty weeks (including 10% discount).

Within the ten-week registration one class may be missed and added on at the end of the registration period.

How do I pay?

Cash or cheque in advance of first class.

How long is each lesson?

Each session is two hours in length including a short ten minute break.

Who will be teaching me?

Politismos employs a variety of experienced and qualified teachers who are native speakers of English.

What will I be doing in class sessions?

Class sessions will include a variety of activities such as discussion, role-plays, listening comprehension, grammar and vocabulary exercises. A variety of audio-visual materials and equipment will be used. The tutor will aim to introduce new language and give you the opportunity to practise that language. The goal is then for you to produce that language in as natural a context as the classroom allows. There may be a certain amount of reading and writing during the classroom sessions, particularly to introduce and practise new language, but most reading and writing can be done most efficiently and at your own pace in your own time.

Is there any homework?

For maximum improvement and progress it is as, if not more, important what you do outside the classroom as it is what you do during the class. Homework will be provided by the tutor but you will be expected to supplement this with your own work. There is no recommended minimum or maximum time but, obviously, the more time you find to devote to home study the faster your improvement will be. It will also give you a better return on your financial investment in the course.

Which learning materials do I need?

A course book is provided. The tutor will primarily be using the set course book but will also supplement this with other learning materials where necessary. There is, of course, a huge variety of other published material in EFL which you might choose to purchase to help your learning.

What level am I?

Cambridge examinations are available at five levels, i.e. Key English Test (KET), Preliminary English Test (PET), First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) and Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). For more details please refer to the Cambridge EFL Examinations website at www.cambridgeesol.org/exams/index.htm#IELTS. If you have already achieved at a certain level, you will obviously begin to study with Politismos at the next level. If you are not certain of your level, we will offer you a brief placement test.

How long should I study for?

The EFL courses are designed for maximum flexibility. You can register as many times as you (and your tutor) feel are necessary for your objectives, primarily your readiness to sit the relevant Cambridge exam.

Does Politismos offer the Cambridge exams on site?

No. You will apply individually when you are ready to take the relevant exam (see Cambridge ESOL Examinations www.cambridgeesol.org/).

When should I take the exam?

When you feel you are ready together with a tutor's recommendation. This may be after one registration period or after several. Exams are held on various dates throughout the year (see http://www.cambridgeesol.org/).

Where do I take the exam?

The nearest examination centre is in York (see www.cambridgeesol.org/).

Must I take the exam?

No. These courses are open to everybody, whatever your personal objectives.
